Cass Elliot

September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974

Known to the world as “Mama Cass,” Ellen Naomi Cohen, AKA Cass Elliot, was a singer and member of the American vocal group, The Mamas & the Papas.  Elliot’s voice can be heard prominently on many of their best-known recordings, including “California Dreamin'” and “Monday Monday.”

After The Mamas & the Papas broke up in 1968, she was able to release a number of solo albums.  She continued to enjoy success that culminated with a sold-out run of shows in London in 1974.  And, as all things on this blog go, the good times ended there. Elliot died of a heart attack in her sleep (not of a ham sandwich) in her flat in Mayfair at the age of 32.  The exact same flat, incidentally, in which The Who drummer, Keith Moon, would also die some 4 years later.  Musicians/renters beware.
