Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a professor at Bowdoin College, volunteered to fight for the State of Maine in the U.S. Civil War. Despite having no previous military training, he became one of the most celebrated officers in the Union Army. His heroic hill-top stand at the battle of Gettysburg, for which he received the Medal of Honor, is depicted in the novel The Killer Angels (and later, the subsequent movie Gettysburg.) Following Gettysburg, Chamberlain commanded troops at the Siege of Petersburg and finished out the war as a commanding officer overseeing Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. After the war ended, he returned to home and served as Governor of Maine for four years. Upon leaving office, he returned to Bowdoin, acting as the college’s president for 12 years. Chamberlain lived to the age of 85 before finally succumbing to the lingering injuries he sustained during the war.
